Thomas Sowell

The following was on “True Stories” Facebook page on 12/4/25. Many “Thought Provoker” quotations have come from Thomas Sowell’s books.

=================

Thomas Sowell sat in a Harlem public library as a teenager and stared at an economics book he barely understood, then whispered to himself that he would keep reading until the world made sense. That quiet promise turned a high school dropout into one of the most influential thinkers of the last century.

Sowell grew up in poverty so sharp it shaped every instinct he carried.

He left home at seventeen. He held jobs that paid just enough to survive. He joined the Marine Corps during the Korean War and trained as a photographer because it was the only skill that offered a future. But the real turning point came when he discovered education not as obligation but as escape.

After the Marines he enrolled at Howard University. Professors noticed his intensity and recommended he transfer to Harvard. He did, graduating in 1958, then continued on to Columbia and finally the University of Chicago, where he studied under Milton Friedman.

His intellect was undeniable, but what made him different was the clarity with which he questioned assumptions from every side of the political spectrum.

Sowell’s early academic work focused on labor markets and economic history. He challenged widely accepted ideas about inequality, race, and policy, presenting data in ways that irritated both conservatives and liberals because he refused to bend arguments to ideology. He prized evidence over applause.

His book Black Education: Myths and Tragedies, published in 1972, sparked national debate. Sowell argued that good intentions often produced damaging results when separated from real world incentives. Colleagues warned him that taking unpopular positions could cost him promotions and grants. He wrote anyway.

At the Hoover Institution he produced some of his most influential work. Basic Economics became a global teaching text. His columns dissected public policy with a precision that made supporters cheer and critics bristle. He never softened his tone for popularity. He believed clarity mattered more than comfort.

Behind the scenes, he lived quietly. He photographed landscapes. He mentored students who were startled by how generous he was with his time. He never saw himself as a celebrity thinker. He saw himself as a man who owed the truth to the kid in the library who once struggled to understand the first pages of an economics book.

Thomas Sowell did not chase acceptance. He chased understanding. In the process he became a voice impossible to ignore, a thinker whose ideas continue to challenge, confront, and force readers to reconsider what they believe.

I’ve read the following books by Thomas Sowell and highly recommend every one of them:

Homosexuality and "Pride"

The public sex displays ruined whatever might have been fine about “Pride.” They still say it’s about “love” and “acceptance.” That stopped being true around 2013 in D.C., when it became common for shirtless old men to step out for pride downtown wearing leather harnesses, “transgenders” showing off their mastectomy scars and kinky deviants wearing fetish costumes. That has nothing to do with “love” or societal “acceptance” of romantic adult partners. That’s exhibitionism. And I never consented to being exposed to it. (Which is the same thing as sexual harassment, by the way.)

Israel vs Arabs

We need to remember the statement of Golda Meir: “If Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be peace. If Jews put down their weapons today, there would be no Israel.”

Where a Loss of Moral Compass Started

The loss of a moral compass that distinguished good from evil started with a hatred towards Israel that became accepted and then encouraged in society.  Equating the heinous acts of Hamas terrorists, who deliberately hide behind innocent children, with the actions of IDF soldiers, who defend all civilians—especially children—has led to a loss of the ability to distinguish between good and evil.

There are only 15 million Jews worldwide, comprising less than 0.2% of the world's population, but condoning anti-Semitism—even or especially when couched as anti-Zionism—opens the door to a world without boundaries or ethics. When we turn the world upside down and pretend that Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas are "good" and Israel is an "evil colonizer" (an especially ridiculous claim, given that Jews have lived in Israel continuously for over 3,000 years and are the indigenous people of that land); when we deny the Holocaust; or when we blame the death of Kennedy or the pedophilia of Jeffrey Epstein on Israel, we are leading ourselves down a pathway that will accept any form of evil and then pretend that it is righteousness.

Israel is the Front Line of Defense

Most educated people recognize that Israel is the front line of defense in a war against the West. The enemies of Israel would attack the United States just as vehemently as they attack Israel if they could. They call Israel the “Little Satan” with America being the “Great Satan.” Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. It is the only place in the region where people can observe any religion they choose, be it Muslim, Christian, Jew, Druze, or atheist, and live by any personal sexual standard they embrace, whether straight, gay, or even transgender/gender fluid.

Jews Are the “Coal Mine”

This is not about anti-Semitism, even though there is truth to the old statement that “Jews are the canary in the coal mine.” Historically we can see that if a culture accepts anti-Semitism, it soon accepts all forms of hate. And this is what we are now finding in Western culture, as evidenced by the AP article, which portrays Hezbollah as innocent victims, denying the many thousands of attacks that they have launched at Israel and their repeated commitment to destroying that nation.

Hamas Are Proud of Their War Crimes

On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked Israel in ways more brutal and evil than anything seen since the Middle Ages: murder, rape, torture, and the kidnapping of over 1,200 civilians. It was even worse than the Nazi regime, which tried to conceal its atrocities in concentration camps, because these Hamas perpetrators proudly recorded and shared their acts as if they were admirable. The entire world was shocked, condemning them as the ultimate manifestation of evil in human form for the heinous crimes they committed.

Demokrats Are Soft On Crime

A 2022 report by the Heritage Foundation, “The Blue City Murder Problem,” found that 27 of the top 30 cities with the highest homicide rates were run by Democrats. … With their dehumanizing rhetoric and soft-on-crime policies, progressives create permission structures that excuse crime and violence, remove accountability, and blur the distinction between right and wrong.

Western Civilization Values Found in the Bible

Western civilization is not based on industrialization. Rather, it is founded on accepting and integrating the values found in the Bible—both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. At the most basic level, this includes the Ten Commandments, the Torah, and the many teachings of Jesus: the rejection of enslaving other human beings; acting rightly and righteously; and, most clearly, recognizing the difference between good and evil and fighting evil whenever it raises its ugly head.

United Nations vs Israel

The United Nations, an institute built on ideals of fairness and equality, has become a breeding ground for relentless, one-sided attacks on Israel—a democratic state in the Middle East. Let’s call it what it is: institutionalized antisemitism. While Israel is held to impossible standards and vilified in hundreds of resolutions, some of the world’s most oppressive regimes walk away unscathed.

When LEFT and Right Share

Today our modern vision of the good life has been nearly universally transformed into the freedom of personal choice, control of your identity, being accepted for who you are, finding adventure, and creating your own path in life. For children of the Left, a slight supplemental variation includes finding meaning in particular causes, like climate change, gender identity, and so-called anti-racism. For children of the right—mostly Christian—they find some small portion of the good life in patriotism and personal faith. But both modern groups—the Left and the Right—roughly share the same modern vision.

Palestinian Identity?

The so-called “Palestinian national identity” is a modern construct, engineered for political exploitation and weaponized as a strategic tool against Israel. Unlike most nations that emerge from shared history, culture, or language, the Palestinian identity was cobbled together in the mid-20th century, not out of genuine heritage but as a calculated move by Arab powers to foster opposition to the Jewish State. It was an artificial project, devoid of organic roots, and aimed squarely at delegitimizing Israel’s existence.

A Result of Public School and University Indoctrination

Multiple polls in the past few years—from Gallup to Pew to Axios—have shown that for younger Americans, socialism is viewed roughly as favorably, and in some cases more favorably, than capitalism. How can you blame them? Their classrooms are inundated with whitewashed history about socialists and communists and full of anti-American views that pain our system, including our capitalist economic system, as predatory. Moreover, poll after poll shows that young people in the Untied States express far more skeptical views of America’s global position than previous generations did; to a great many, other countries are better than the United States. A “Harvard Youth Poll” from December 2021 found that only 31 percent of young Americans (ages eighteen to twenty-nine) believe “America is the greatest country in the world.” Fully half of young Americans believe that there are “other nations as great or greater than America.” Worse, America’s youngest generation has twice the number of avowed atheists—with young people rejecting religious faith in record numbers.

LEFTISTS Teach Sexual Anarchy

Under the banner of “sexual liberation” and “bodily autonomy,” progressive voices have promoted the idea that personal freedom means unrestrained sexual expression, divorced from any moral or relational context. This ideology teaches that sex is simply a recreational activity, not something sacred or reserved for marriage.

When young people are taught that marriage is just one option among many, and that long-term commitment is unnecessary for fulfillment or family, the institution inevitably suffers.

By detaching sex from responsibility and love from duty, the left has promoted a culture of momentary pleasure over enduring purpose, eroding the very foundation that stable marriages and families are built upon.

Undermining the Meaning of Marriage

At its core, marriage has traditionally been rooted in the natural, biological complementarity of male and female, a design that reflects the union of two sexes. Yet today, leftist activists and institutions insist that gender is not a biological reality but a subjective identity.

This belief not only confuses the foundational terms of “husband” and “wife,” but it also makes the entire concept of a gendered union seem arbitrary. By prioritizing self-expression over enduring truth, the left has chipped away at the very meaning of marriage, replacing it with a version that cannot carry the same purpose.

The Left Wants Workers, Not Thinkers

The underlying assumption of the “woke” Left is that regular people are dumb—or, at best, will quietly acquiesce to their new status quo. When the progressive Left looks at students, today they see groups of people—by race, gender, or sexuality—but at the outset of their project, the masses of America’s children were all future “workers.” The “experts” and “professors” on the Left, from the very beginning of their progressive takeover, have assumed the least of average citizens—trying to shift the classroom from a place of virtuous living and liberated minds to a place where basic skills are bestowed upon future workers. The latest iteration of this trend is the push for STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education, to be at the forefront of our classrooms. America’s classrooms have been centralized, technicalized, and scientized—with the aim of pumping out workers, not thinkers.

Democrats Destroyed the Sanctity of Marriage

After Democrats paved the way to the legalization of same-sex marriage, marriage could no longer be defined as a covenant between a man and a woman. The government didn’t just expand legal benefits — it fundamentally altered the meaning of marriage. It replaced a sacred, complementary union with a gender-neutral contract. This was a major blow to the sanctity of marriage.

“Progressives of Social Control”

Underneath our noses, Progressives in America quietly labored to gain control over an even more powerful set of “commanding heights”—those that steer the hearts and minds of America’s children. With American conservatives mostly preoccupied with defending economic freedom and military might, American Progressives knew that social control was far more powerful than economic control. As such, they set out to gain direct national control of the “commanding heights” of America’s schools. A project set in motion more than one hundred years ago is today leveraged through 16,000 hours of government instruction.

What Happened to Character?

In 1973, we eliminated the draft, signaling to all men that their purpose in life is not to protect their home, family, and women (which has been the purpose of all men in all civilizations since basically forever). Weeks later, Roe v. Wade happened, signaling to all women that their purpose in life is not to bring forth life as mothers (also a social norm since basically forever). In the decades to follow, the narrative became “you do you,” spurring a deep introspection in society. People now have to “figure out who they are” — alone — as society has unmoored them and abandoned them. You don’t have to be a pillar of your community; you can move anywhere and do whatever you want. The narrative is no longer that suffering for your life’s purpose anchors you but rather that suffering is bad and must be eradicated. And so generations of the self-serving, unmoored, naval-gazing, eliminate-all-suffering mindset finds us where we are. We have no purpose and are obsessed with ourselves. We’re looking inside and seeing all the problems instead of looking around us and finding where we can step up and serve.

Government: Republic or Mob?

In a republic, representatives are democratically elected, but then, those who are elected are expected to exercise their governing authority according to the established rule of law. Yet, many representatives are under the impression that they are supposed to test the current mood of the people and represent accordingly. This mentality reduces the republican form of government to a virtual democracy. The popular opinion of the people is unstable because the mood of the mob can be easily manipulated and can change from day to day, especially in our age of instant mass communication. In contrast, the rule of established law is not easily changed and provides stability. This is why the founders chose a republic instead of a democracy as the American form of Government.

The Value of Jews/Israel to the Western World

You don’t have to like Jews individually or as a group. But if you are an honest and moral person, you will concede that Jews and the Nation of Israel are inextricably intertwined with the Old Testament (the Torah). That book introduced the world to God and laid out God’s commandments (both Noahide and the Ten Commandments), defining people’s moral obligations to God, to each other, to themselves, and to the natural world around them.

When evil people deviate from those core moral values, the first group they attack is the Jews because the Jews remind them of their moral failures. And after the Jews—always—the evil doers go after everyone else. (As the saying goes, first they come for the Saturday people and then for the Sunday people.)

Because Jews are the canaries in the coalmine whenever tyranny becomes ascendant, everyone, Jewish or not, should worry about the venomous blood libel that alleges that Charlie Kirk, rather than being killed by a trans-loving leftist, was a victim of shadowy Jewish terrorism.

By Andrea Widburg, Antisemites are going to town with Charlie Kirk’s death.

The Beauty of Marital Sex

The beauty in marriage, in which the two halves of the human race are united in a lifelong union that begets new persons, exceeds the pleasures of sexual indulgence. As we are seeing, the promises of sexual indulgence are mostly empty anyway. In contrast, Christian marriage illustrates the truth that we are meant for love, and that, when we live for something greater than our own desires, we will often find pleasure included as well.

Christian Families Best For Culture

Stable natural families would be, by far, the best anti-poverty, anti-crime, and pro-education program. Thus, Christian sexual morality is integral to social justice because it protects and promotes family formation and flourishing. It is not an idiosyncratic or arbitrary religious decree or practice but, instead, is rooted in human nature and ordered toward our good and the good of those around us. Its truth and beauty are manifest in loving and enduring relationships, grounded on oaths sworn and upheld, rather than the fickle flux of day-to-day desires. This commitment provides a solid foundation for an enduring intimacy between man and wife.

An Ungrateful Nation is Dangerous.

Without traditional reverence for the past, an ungrateful nation not only suffers a loss of knowledge but is plagued by hubris—so often the twin of ignorance—believing that it alone has discovered ideas and behaviors unique to itself and its own era, when they are in fact ancient. This closed mindset seeks a kind of perfection, a heaven on earth, instead of the good—and it ends up obtaining neither.

Our Cultural Crisis

Much of our society’s current crisis derives from this personal refusal or inability to respect the property of others, to tell the truth, to stand up to the bully, to protect the weaker, and to end each day in contemplation that you were more a moral force for the common good than either a neutral observer or on the wrong side of the ethical ledger. When individual behavior and decorum falter, so does a country, which is, after all, only the common reflection of millions of its individuals.

Palestinian Arab Aggression Long Before 1948

It’s also important to highlight that Palestinian Arabs weren’t passive bystanders in 1948. They actively fought against Palestinian Jews, both before and during the war. The Arab Liberation Army and local militias coordinated attacks on Jewish towns and settlements. Even before the war officially began, there was a civil conflict starting in November 1947. Palestinian Arab fighters imposed brutal sieges on Jewish cities, such as Jerusalem, cutting off food and supplies. Groups like the “Army of the Holy War” led heavy assaults and controlled critical routes, including the main road between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

But Arab hostility didn’t start 1947. Violence against Jews in Palestine has a long and bloody history. The infamous chant “Itbah Al Yahoo” (“Slaughter the Jews”) predates the establishment of Israel by centuries. Let’s not forget the 1517 massacres by the Ottoman Empire or the 1834 Safed pogrom, where hundreds of Jews were raped and murdered. The 20th century saw a string of atrocities, from the 1920 Nebi Musa riots to the 1929 Hebron massacre and the anti-Jewish violence of the 1936-1939 Arab Revolt.
