Another dismaying effect that Freudian theory has brought about in American thought and culture has been the misallocation of resources. This has been most prominent in the field of mental illness, where the vast majority of the nation’s 200,000 [1992 numbers] psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers spend their time doing counseling and psychotherapy based, directly or indirectly, on Freudian theory. Talking to one’s therapist about your mother has become virtually a national pastime and continues to usurp an extraordinary large share of professional resources that should be going to the seriously mentally ill.
