Married Couples Spend More On Children

Careful research also shows that marital status determines how parents spend the money they do have on their children.  Cohabiting parents spend significantly less of their income on health care and education, but more on outside child care.  They also spend substantially more on alcohol and tobacco for themselves compared with their married peers.
