The Damage from Sexual Anarchy

After World War II, Western society underwent what is known as the “Sexual Revolution.” With the weakening of biblical values, and the ease in obtaining both contraception and, since the 1970s, abortion, more unmarried people have had sexual relations with more partners than ever before in Western—and perhaps world—history. However, in addition to creating more fatherless children than ever before, this revolution has harmed both sexes, especially women. But men, too, have paid a price in at least two ways.

One is fewer men seek to marry, and men benefit enormously from marriage. In the words of Nobel Prize-winning economist George Akerlof, “Men settle down when they get married; if they fail to get married they fail to settle down.” And in the words of the late University of Virginia sociologist Steven Nock, “Marriage is one of the last ‘rite[s]’ of passage into manhood” remaining in our society.

The other is many men are less motivated to succeed in life. One of the primary reasons men always worked hard was to “earn” the commitment of a woman. But if women are readily available without having to achieve much, fewer men will seek to achieve much.

Women, for their part, were told they could enjoy emotionless and commitment-free sex as much as men could. But a host of academic studies and popular reports of sexually promiscuous women refute this notion. Indeed, among young women, high rates of depression often relate to casual sex.

For example, a major study of American college-aged women, published in The Journal of Sex Research, a publication of the United States National Institutes of Health, concluded “hookup behavior during college was positively correlated with experiencing clinically significant depression symptoms.”

Similarly, regarding teenagers generally, “A recent longitudinal study published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology suggests that teenagers who engage in casual sex are more likely to suffer from depression than their peers who don’t engage in casual sex…. Given that teens who practiced celibacy were rated lowest for clinical depression and depressive symptoms on the charts, promiscuity may be symptomatic of depression.”

One consequence of so many young women believing the message that they can—and should—enjoy sex with as many men as men can with women was summarized in this comment by a young woman cited in the American magazine Vanity Fair: “It’s rare for a woman of our generation to meet a man who treats her like a priority instead of an option.”

Children, Honor Your Parents

Yet another reason why honoring parents and long enduring civilization are connected is strong families form a major bulwark against totalitarian regimes. A standard feature of totalitarian regimes is the shifting of children’s loyalty and obedience from their parents to the state. One of the first things totalitarian regimes seek to do is weaken parental authority and replace it with the party or state. In such countries, children are encouraged to inform on their parents if they make critical comments—or even tell jokes—about government leaders or about the dominant ideology (in the modern period, that would almost always refer to communism, Nazism, or radical Islamism). Consequently, parents would often fear to speak openly in front of their children.

Immoral Ideologies, Intellectual Foolish Beliefs

Nearly every American university was founded to teach young people theology and other subjects. Moral education was deemed the most important form of education, and knowledge of the Bible was assumed to age part of that moral curriculum. By the early-to-mid twentieth century, education, first at universities, then at high schools and elementary schools, was divorced from God and the Bible, and a disproportionately high percentage of secular intellectuals adhered to immoral ideologies and intellectually foolish beliefs.

Nowhere is the belief in education as the road to a moral society more apparent than in some of the later writings of the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, an atheist who was deeply committed to moral behavior, published a critique of religion, The Future of an Illusion (the illusion being God and religion). Freud did not fear the breakdown of belief in God would have any moral implications among intellectuals: “Civilization has little to fear from educated people and brain-workers. In them, the replacement of religious motives for civilized behavior by other secular motives, would proceed unobtrusively.” 

As Dr. Freud was to witness within ten years of his statement, civilization has as much, if not more, to fear from educated people as from the uneducated. Freud’s fellow Austrian and German intellectuals show no more moral insight or strength than any other group of Germans and Austrians. What Germany lacked during World War II was not enough educated people or, for that matter, artistically sophisticate people but not enough good people.

Many would counter here that Germany lacked enough good people among the religiously educated as well. They would be entirely right. The failure of German Christianity was horrific. But the moral failure of German Christians (with noble exceptions such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer) is almost universally acknowledged—even by virtually all Christians.

On the other hand, the moral failure of secular education and secular intellectuals in Germany is almost universally ignored.

Without Remembering the Past, Wisdom is Impossible

Wisdom vs Knowledge and Intelligence

About Slavery

Life is A Relay Race

Bad Company Corrupts Good Morals

A survey of more than 90,000 black, white and Hispanic high school and junior high school students from 175 schools in 80 American communities found that those black students whose grade-point average reached 3.5 or higher had fewer friends of their own race than blacks with lower grade-point averages. Such negative reactions by fellow black students to those among them who were higher achievers in school have been characterized as a rejection of those who were stigmatized as “acting white”— that is, behaving in ways that were equated with disloyalty to their race.

An empirical study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that having a higher percentage of black schoolmates had a strong negative effect on the educational achievements of black students— especially high-ability black students. Another study, of ability-grouping in general, found that educating students among others of similar ability levels improved the academic performance of high-ability students— and especially high-ability minority students.

Such patterns have by not means been confined to blacks or even to the United States Among Hispanic American students, those with a grade-point average of 4.0 averaged 3 fewer friends of their own ethnicity than did white students with a 4.0 grade-point average. Similar negative reactions to educational achievements among their peers have been found among Maoris in New Zealand, Burakumin in Japan and the white underclass in Britain.

Diversity or Balkanization?

A fragmented society of people polarized into separated group identities used to be called a “Balkanized” society, and the painful history of strife, bloodshed and atrocities in the Balkans stood as an example of how destructive that can be to all. But that was before the word “Balkanization” was replaced by the much nicer-sounding word “diversity,” from which all sorts of wonderful benefits have been assumed and incessantly proclaimed, without any empirical test of those claims.  This new and nicer-sounding word has also avoided having the painful history of the Balkans— and of similar places elsewhere around the world— being called to mind.

By “diversity” those who incessantly proclaim that word, and its presumed benefits, mean more than simply people with different cultures interacting. The word “diversity” is used to imply positive interactions, with benefits for the various participants and for society at large. But we cannot simply define our way into beneficial outcomes. Whether the promotion of separate identities— by race, sex or other characteristics— is beneficial or harmful in its consequences is an empirical question— and a question almost never confronted by apostles of “diversity.” The actual track record of promoting separate group identities, whether called “Balkanization” or “diversity,” has been appalling, in countries around the world.

Black Poverty?

Despite the high poverty rate among black Americans in general, the poverty rate among black married couples has been less than 10 percent every year since 1994.

The poverty rate of married blacks is not only lower than that of blacks as a whole, but in some years has also been lower than that of whites as a whole. In 2016, for example, the poverty rate for blacks was 22 percent, for whites was 11 percent, and for black married couples was 7.5 percent.

Do racists care whether someone black is married or unmarried? If not, then why do married blacks escape poverty so much more often than other blacks, if racism is the main reason for black poverty? If the continuing effects of past evils such as slavery play a major causal role today, were the ancestors of today's black married couples exempt from slavery and other injustices?

As far back as 1969, young black males whose homes included newspapers, magazines, and library cards, and who also had the same education as young white males, had similar incomes as their white counterparts. Do racists care whether blacks have reading material and library cards?

Numbers and Words

While numbers can be used in ways that are deceptive as regards particular issues, words can be used in ways that can be more sweepingly deceptive as regards how a whole society is seen.

Numbers may deceive us because of their apparent objectivity, but words can deceive more comprehensively because of their emotional appeals that numbers seldom have. There may be very legitimate reasons to react adversely to words like "war," "racism," or "murder," but it is the illegitimate invoking of emotionally charged words that is especially dangerous— as anything that overrides thought, or substitutes for thought, can be dangerous. Emotional manipulation is, however, only one of the dangers when words are used in ways that obscure both realities and the connections of cause and effect behind those realities.

The Danger of Allowing Islam

Once upon a time, the Islamic world was a superpower and its jihad an irresistible force to be reckoned with. Over two centuries ago, however, a rising Europe—which had experienced more than one millennium of Muslim conquests and atrocities—eclipsed and defanged Islam. As Muhammad’s civilization retreated into obscurity, the post-Christian West slowly came into being. Islam did not change, but the West did: Muslims still venerate their heritage and religion—which commands jihad against infidels—whereas the West has learned to despise its heritage and religion, causing it to become an unwitting ally of the jihad.

Hence the current situation: Islamic jihad is back in full vigor, while the West facilitates it in varying degrees; hence the irony: “At a time when the military superiority of the West—meaning chiefly the USA—over the Muslim world has never been greater,” observes historian Alan G. Jamieson, “Western countries feel insecure ind the face of the activities of Islamic terrorists. . . . In all the long centuries of Christian-Muslim conflict, never has the military imbalance between the two sides been greater, yet the dominant West can apparently derive no comfort from that fact.”

In short, if Islam is terrorizing the West today, that is not because it can, but because the West allows it to. For no matter how diminished, a still swinging Scimitar will always overcome a strong but sheathed Sword.
